A recreational cycle ride or walk is always improved by a decent refreshment stop. Worth noting then that a number of new independent cafes have opened around the MalvernTrail area recently, despite the various restrictions we all had to respect.

We’ve visited all of the following and can vouch for them as good refuelling stops and friendly to both walkers and cyclists. They are likely to appreciate advance warning for visits by groups. Listed alphabetically.

Harvey’s @ St James’ Church in Welland. Hot drinks, cakes, light lunches, Wed – Fri 8.30am to 3pm. Likely to open for more days in future, see their Facebook page for news. (The cafe in the village shop has closed.) Enjoyed the lemon polenta cake.

The Loose Box at Barton Court, just a little south west of Colwall village, WR13 6HN. Winter hours to 1st April: Wed-Sun 9.30am to 3pm. Interesting and tasty cakes, light lunches, range of teas etc. Check Facebook page for updates.

Carrot cake at Barton Court

Orchard Coffee House, next to community shop and attached to Gorsley Baptist Church, HR9 7SE. Tue-Fri to 4.30pm, Sat to 4pm. A good range of cakes – tea loaf gets our vote. House Facebook page.

Alfrick community shop road sign

And don’t forget the refreshment facilities at the community shops in Alfrick (north of the Malverns, good cakes) and Bromesberrow Heath (to the south, fewer locally made cakes).
