Music Sessions

Note: most pub based sessions are free, but some special events/mini-festivals will have a door charge.

Open mike at The Great Malvern Hotel, on Tuesday nights. Search on Facebook for current info (a closed FB group). Graham Road, WR14 2HN.

Music at The Morgan. A selection of local musicians at ‘open mike’ sessions on  Wednesday nights at friendly pub owned by Wye Valley Brewery. Also Sunday acoustic sessions. 52 Clarence Road.

West Malvern Social Club on Facebook – Music night every Thursday, 9.30pm to midnight.

The Retreat pub/bar in Ledbury – info may be out of date as website has gone. Live music Tuesdays (open mic night) and Thursdays (band spot). Plus last Sunday of the month, Super Session from 8.30pm.

Music Clubs

Malvern Concert Club put on “international standard classical chamber music concerts” at Malvern Theatre.

Abbey Jazz Fortnightly jazz sessions every other Sunday at Malvern Rugby Club, Spring Lane, from 8pm. Small band sessions focus on the ‘swing’ era of the 1930s and 40.

Joining In

Vocal Variations holds regular meetings at Holy Trinity Church, North Malvern Road, Malvern WR14 4LR – a quick google will probably throw up next session. Members will sing songs with accompaniment which relate to a set theme, aiming for the highest standard of performance. An audience is vital to the singers; anyone can come and listen for as long as they like.

Musicians

Some local groups and musos:

Flatworld “Rich compelling melodies and tight driving rhythm, Flatworld play an eclectic mix of music from Eastern Europe and France.”

Harpsong (Jonathan Penley) music is based on celtic roots, playing celtic harp, piano accordion, guitar, reed organ and penny whistle.

Malthouse Passage is a 5 piece band of multi instrumentalists and singers with a folk music background. Their style is “dynamic, original and very foot-stomping infectious” with a mix of traditional and contemporary folk songs.

Vo Fletcher – part of Flatworld and various collaborations.

The Pewke Band for anyone who wants faithful revivals of Rock and Blues from the late sixties to the mid seventies.

Worcestershire Saxophone Ensemble is based in Malvern.

Classical

English Symphony Orchestra (also the English String Orchestra) puts on a range of concerts, from full orchestra to quartet, in Malvern and surrounding areas.
