Towards Wales

The much photographed Kilpeck churchKilpeck Church (SO444305), left. Well worth a detour for the carvings (not just around the door!). There are quite a few web sites with info. We suggest HerefordWebpages as a starter, Sacred Destinations has some good photos and history. Also check out Kilpeck Inn, which hopes to be the greenest pub in the country.

Hay-on-Wye Secondhand bookshops, mountain biking etc. on the Welsh border; Kilvert Gallery, Clyro.

Hereford Cathedral The famous Mappa Mundi, Chained Library, "wonderful carvings in stone and wood, fine tapestries, and beautiful stained glass" all worth a visit. And outside there's also the sculpture of Elgar leaning on his bicycle - there's a video 360 degree view on YouTube (better with the sound off).

Golden Valley and Black Mountains Experience Where to stay and other local info. Bull's Head, Craswall, is in a great place by the Mountains with basic camping available (phone 01981 510616).

The village of Dorstone in Golden Valley has the Pandy Inn (a favourite of MalvernTrail) and almost opposite, the community enterprise Dorstone's Front Room, with teas, coffees and local cakes when open (Mon-Fri 9am to 1pm)

Garway Church and Dovecote are worth visiting (close to the Welsh border) - note that dovecote is on private land.

Green man at Dore AbbeyDore Abbey (SO386304) Note that the web site has a very flash interactive guide book, but it may take ages to find the info you want. The massive barn-like interior of the Abbey is sometimes used for theatrical productions. As well as carved screens etc there are interesting items of masonry, as right. You could also read the info on HeritageTrail (no connection).
